Coal tar is a compliance problem now, not a preference.
West Bloomfield, Clarkston and Ann Arbor have banned coal tar sealers outright, and the list of Michigan municipalities keeps growing. Coal tar carries roughly a thousand times the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of an asphalt-based emulsion, and it runs off into storm systems.
